Our goal at Opus Athletics is to make happier, healthier, fitter people.

the low down

The core of what we do is based on defining what Fitness is. None have done it better than Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit. You can read the details here.

It starts with improving on all our your fitness skills:

  • cardiovascular endurance

  • stamina

  • flexibility

  • strength

  • power

  • speed

  • accuracy

  • AGILITY

  • balance

  • coordination

The programming is constantly varied, has functional movements and executed at high intensity.

In short, the majority of our programming follows a CrossFit Methodology. Which is not a routine. Our goal is to prepare you for every and any imaginable fitness task. What we do varies from day to day, week to week, and month to month. If you get bored at a gym, well, it’s because a routine gets boring, that won’t apply here.

we use functional movements

These can be described as a movement that involves more than one joint, and has a core to extremity movement pattern. In short, we don’t use machines, and we rarely isolate. Functional movements are not mastered overnight. Our coaches are constantly working with clients to help them improve their technique, no different than any other elite athlete has a coach to help them with their sport. From Wayne Gretzky to Michael Jordan, they are constantly working on their craft to be the best at what they do, our goals are no different.

high intensity training

It’s about working hard. "Hard working" is a necessary character trait for all our clients, it’s how we get results. Our coaches and our group training environment will certainly help you in that department, as will the community of people around you. And this is where we might lose some people, because if hard working is not in your list of character traits, you will not like what we do. We like to think that nothing worth having comes easy, and what you accomplish here will do more than make you a better athlete, it will make you better at life!

That was CrossFit in a nutshell.

Programming

At Opus Athletics we do not copy and paste 12 week programs. We are constantly analyzing data, learning through results, and as a result, keep changing what we do. Throughout the year, our goals shift, so what works in the winter, might not be our focus in the summer. At the moment, here are the classes we offer.

CrossFit Program: Offered 5 days/week. Monday-Tuesday-Thursday-Friday-Saturday. Saturday’s are often parntered/team WODs. Less focuses on Strength. Whereby during the week, we do follow a strength template. Monday/Thursday is more leg focused, and Tuesday/Friday more upper body.

Engine class is offered on Wednesday. This breaks up the week quite nicely. An engine class can be classified as a cardio class. We use primarily cardio machines, as well as offer mostly interval based training.

RideFit-An OPUS Original, is a class that emerged from our lab here in Whistler. We centre the class around a Concept 2 Bike Erg. (It’s an air bike, not the one with arms, that has no chain, so really makes it hard to spin!) This is not a spin class, as we can, and do other exercises off the bike. This is the only class that we allow drop-ins that do not have CrossFit experience! So, come check it out!

Open Gym: There are times throughout each day dedicated to a non-structured hour. Open gym classes have a coach present, but, they are often working with other clients, or running a class. This is an hour where you can use the gym to do your own thing. Whether it’s a program our coaches have designed for you, one of our group added on tracks, or your own programming.

Orientation/Free Workout session. This is where you start if you are looking to join the gym, but do not have CrossFit experience. In this session we will take the time to get to know a little about you and your goals. We will explain the CrossFit methodology, and how the gym works. And, most importantly, give you a workout so that you can experience what it’s like to do a CrossFit style workout.

Foundations Classes. Once you have completed an orientation session, the foundations course is where we bring you up to speed on all there is to know so you can join the group classes.
